Importance of chalk
Every great adventure demands that the adventurer is equipped with the tools that will aid the one bold enough to traverse its landscape. In the case of rock climbing, weightlifting, gymnastics, pole dancing and many more, performance chalk -aka climbing, hand, gym, athletic, lifting chalk etc- becomes the athlete’s, or adventurer’s, greatest asset. Performance chalk is applied anywhere on the body. However, the majority of people apply it on their hands when they become sweaty due to physical exertion and begin to lose friction with the surface in contact. This can become troublesome and even dangerous for the performing athlete, resulting in blisters, callouses, and possible injury or death. It becomes necessary for athletes to equip some sort of gripping agent to prevent the implications of sweaty hands.
Rock climbers attest to the fact that there are some mountains that cannot be climbed without the assistance of hand chalk due to steep inclines. Although there is a possibility of gloves being damaged due to the terrain, that problem does not exist for performance chalk, since it is a product that is applied directly onto one’s hands, merely forming a barrier of chalk between your hands and the environment.
Kinds of chalk
There are different kinds of chalk, made from different elements. Normal chalk that is used on blackboards and sidewalks etc. is made from "Calcium Carbonate", which dissolves in water, making it not ideal for sweat. Performance chalk can be made from different blends. The two mostly used blends are Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Carbonate. They differ in how well they absorb the sweat. Unanimously, Magnesium Carbonate remains the best option for gripping performance because it doesn't dissolve in water and has the best capability of sweat absorption.
Hand chalk is sold in various forms and textures. They are available in block, powder, rock, mixed, and liquid form. Each has their ideal method of use but it's preferential to athletes. New to the chalk industry is the implementation of color. Colored chalk is used for various reasons, like; spectacles, competition, flare etc.
To those who wish to excel in such sports, the necessity of using these products becomes apparent. Even if competing is not a goal, the safety features of hand chalk are enough of a reason to invest in it. And in the words of T.S. Eliot, “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.”
